Mixed Metaphors
Works by Members of the
Artists’ Exchange of Delaware

Barbara Warden 2017 A Heap of Broken Images -1
multimedia 48” x 48”

Here are some musings about how our group—the Artists' Exchange—understands the catch-all theme of our show, “Mixed Metaphors.”

When we think of metaphors we think of the materials, techniques and the range of idioms and themes that each of us pretty consistently invoke—sometimes long standing, sometime emerging. And when we think of “mixed” we think of how different our respective metaphors are. It runs the gamut. Put them together and we come upon a standpoint that allows each of us to explore our different artistic projects.

Despite our differences—or because of them—it allows us to critique, encourage and influence each other as we face the perennial questions. What am I trying to do here? Is it any good? Should I do anything more with it? Have I overdone it? Where am I going with this? How does it relate with my other works? Why do I make my art anyhow? For the sake of just making it? For the sake of a sale? Both? Neither? Despite our differences, we ask each other such questions.

So, even though our metaphors are mixed, we have quite a lot to share with each other. And thank goodness we do—because our metaphors—mixed or not—really do define who we are as artists.

The Artists' Exchange is a group of professional artists who share a contemporary focus and show their work in the Cape region and beyond. The group's goals include:

Elevating the quality of each member's work by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and critiques and in promoting, showing and selling high quality original art.
