Survey of Jack Lewis offers unprecedented display of artist’s work

At age 99, Jack Lewis is one of Delaware’s most celebrated artists and known by many for his engaging paintings of scenery throughout Delaware. The Rehoboth Art League and Raubacher Gallery have compiled a compelling collection of Jack’s works from his early days in the Civilian Conservation Corp up to the present. The exhibition will open on November 18th with a reception from 5pm to 7pm and continue to December 31st. This unique show, titled “A Survey of Jack Lewis: From Home & Beyond,” will offer selected works for sale. In addition there will an exhibition on Jack’s life, which includes a combination of works on loan from collectors around the state along with photos, sketchbooks, and video. This display of art will provide an opportunity to glimpse into the life of this renowned figure. “Jack Lewis is an artist whose vision incorporates the constant and the ever-changing world around him with passion, compassion and delight,” says Rebecca Raubacher, artist and owner of Raubacher Gallery. “Jack Lewis, the artist, provides us with a private visual history of people and places both around us and beyond.” Jack Lewis came to Delaware in the 1930s to work for the Civilian Conservation Corp. As an artist he was commissioned to paint the daily activities of the Corp. He soon was a regular contributor to the local art scene, exhibiting in the Rehoboth Beach VIA art show, and participated in the dedication ceremony of the Rehoboth Art League in 1938. Jack continued to be a regular instructor and artist at the League for several decades and served as an inspiration for many young artists who took his classes. Jack traveled extensively throughout his career as can be seen through his depictions of CCC workers, the South Pacific during WWll, Europe, Latin America and the United States. His love of Delaware always brought him home. As an educator, Lewis taught art in Delaware public schools and the Delaware Community College from 1949 to 1976. As an author, he published several books with forewords written by notable Americans such as N.C. Wyeth and Eleanor Roosevelt. As a fine artist, Jack is known for depiction of people and places. In 1982, Lewis received the Governor’s Award for the Arts. In 1986, Lewis was commissioned by Delaware’s Legislative Council to create murals celebrating the bicentennial of Delaware’s Ratification of the Constitution. These murals can be seen hanging in Legislative Hall in Dover. In 2010, Governor Markell bestowed the prestigious Order of the First State to Jack Lewis. “We are thrilled to offer this show with Raubacher Gallery,” says Sheila Bravo, Executive Director of the Rehoboth Art League. “Jack Lewis is considered one of the League’s founding artists, and is treasured by many.” The opening reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
