Artist Statement

I have been a plein air painter for 35 years. I’ve painted outside in the heat and in the cold, in the morning and in the night. I’ve painted in my backyard when I didn't have a studio and now that I have one I paint there as well. Plein air painting has been the backbone of mostly all of my creative work. After graduating from Pratt University, as an abstract painter, I discovered the work of Emile Gruppe, who was a 20th Century painter, from the Cape Ann area. He became the mentor I never had. I read all his books and attended any shows of his that I could. Gruppe' had the ability to capitalize on abstract forms and combine them to create the most moving realistic images. His work has an energy of its own, a powerful internal element.

His work cemented my relationship with nature. The experience of painting on location has enhanced my appreciation for nature and life. Though my work is very different than Emile Gruppe’s, it is always my goal to give less information than seems necessary. I try to keep things simple, state what is necessary and leave it there. “A Mood of Quiet Introspection.” is how I characterize it. My work seems to speak to this theme. I feel, that in my paintings, there is a place to sit and contemplate nature and all it has to offer.

It is my hope that in viewing this show you might spend a moment with one of my paintings and let your mind wander. Give yourself the time to just be….; mindfully of course.
