WILD DELAWARE: Recent Photographs by Kevin Fleming in the Homestead Gallery.
A Delaware native, Kevin began his career as a newspaper photographer after attending Wesley College. He then spent a decade as a National Geographic photographer and most recently has concentrated on creating books. His photography has won many national and international awards and he has recently been recognized America’s Best Observer by Readers Digest.

TIMELINE:
Mixed Media Work by Nancy Linden in the Corkran Gallery.
Nancy began making art seriously in Houston, Texas in 1992 and has been working in Baltimore, Maryland since 1995. Her work includes figurative oil painting, charcoal drawing, collage and site-specific installation. She also sails schooners and square-rigged ships and has worked in the theater as set and lighting designer, electrician and (regrettably rarely) actor.

AS SAFE AS YESTERDAY IS: Oil Paintings by Bruce Garrity in the Tubbs Gallery.
Bruce’s current work is focused on the woodland interior as a site for events that stem from memories of experiences as a child, an adolescent and an adult. The paintings emphasize an uncanny aspect of these moments, memories projected, allegorical and nostalgic, ironic and elegiac. The spaces depicted are the more intimate surroundings of rocks, trees and water as experienced in the forest, the being in as opposed to the looking upon these circumstances. These staged juxtapositions suggest the human presence even when the figure is unseen and focus on engaging the viewer as an implicit participant.

DIS/ORDER: Paintings by Hylarie McMahon in the Ventures Gallery.
Hylarie is Professor Emerita of Art at Washington University in St. Louis, where she taught for more than two decades. Her work has been shown in one-person exhibitions and invitationals at One Illinois Center, William and Mary College, Webster University, the St. Louis Art Museum, the University of Nebraska, the University of Illinois and at other museums and galleries. She is represented in various private and corporate collections and in the US Government’s Art in Embassies Program.

CONVERSATIONS: Pastel Paintings by Anita Peghini-Raber in the Homestead Gallery.
An impressionist painter, Anita is comfortable working in oils, pastels, watercolor, and acrylics or in a combination. According to Anita, “Since my background comes from writing, I look for the narrative in a subject. It needs to tell a story. Daily life fascinates me with all the small and often hidden treasures that we tend to overlook. I then try to work it into a good composition by finding the shapes. Simultaneously I analyze the feeling the subject evokes in me. My painting style is filled with strong, bold brush strokes showing my excitement. It hopefully communicates some of the positive energy to the viewer. While purposely only hinting at a certain feeling and barely referring to a story, I hope that the viewer will fill in the blanks with his/her personal thoughts and feelings to engage into communication with my art.”

35th ANNUAL MEMBERS’ CRAFT EXHIBITION in the Corkran and Tubbs Galleries.
A members’ exhibit featuring a wide variety of work, including baskets, calligraphy, ceramics, fibers, glass, handmade paper, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media and wood. This is a unique and imaginative craft exhibit with whimsical and functional pieces of art. Featured artist will be Lee Badger of Hedgesville, WV. Lee specializes in ornamental metal work for home and garden. As an artist and furniture maker, he is a member of The Furniture Society and the International Sculpture Center. He belongs to national, regional and local blacksmith guilds and associations and his work and creative achievements consistently earn honors and awards in museum and gallery exhibitions.

STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS: Mixed Media Paintings by Pam Bounds-Seemans in the Ventures Gallery.
Pam is a well-known Delaware visual artist who creates paintings in a folk art style, combining a painted center, collage edge and hand-painted frame. She has painted from her home in Marshallton since 1984 and has exhibited extensively in Delaware over the last 30 years, as well as throughout the region. Pam has won numerous awards and her local scenes have been purchased by both public agencies such as DNREC and the Family Court, as well as by private collectors.

BEACH PATROL: CELEBRATION OF YOUTH, BEAUTY & STRENGTH: Photographs by James Mott in the Homestead Gallery.
Jim was born and raised in Swarthmore, PA and moved to Rehoboth Beach in 2003. He has been working with the camera, which until recently was purely a documentary tool, to develop a collection of landscape and still life images which attempt to evoke the quiet and peaceful nature of coastal living.

70th ANNUAL MEMBERS’ FINE ARTS EXHIBIT in the Corkran and Tubbs Galleries.
A members’ exhibit showcasing a variety of artwork in different mediums. Featured artist will be H. Michael Weinert of New York, NY. According to Michael, “My artwork is influenced by natural forms. Shapes, colors and patterns seen in nature are attractive, whether they are in a single rock or a land and seascape. Especially fascinating are the horizon and shore, where land, sea and sky come together. In a sense, these are expectant and hopeful places.”

RECENT WATERCOLORS AND PASTELS by Michael McFarland in the Ventures Gallery.
Michael was born and raised in central Pennsylvania and continues to live and paint there today. His paintings are inspired by a love of the outdoors and the new ideas which develop over the course of frequent hiking and kayaking trips throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the surrounding region. The goal of his work is to go beyond the simple construction of appealing landscapes or records of travel encounters, with each painting offering another, far more subtle level of meaning. Michael’s paintings utilize elements which explore the emotions and issues which we all encounter in our lives … love, joy, fear, anticipation, disappointment, regret, change, hope and renewal. The images are derived from a combination of sketches from life, reference photos, memory and imagination.

GEOMETRIES OF CONVICTION: Recent work by Orna Feinstein, Richard Hellman and Peggy Sampogna in the Homestead Gallery.

Orna Fienstein

Richard Hellman

Peggy Sampogna

Orna Feinstein, based in Houston, Texas, specializes in monoprints and other mixed media. Her art begins with an observation of nature and ends up in an abstract creation. The beauty of nature, its color, texture and energy attract and inspire her work. In particular, Orna finds the tree trunk to be nature’s most intriguing object. Her favorite media, monoprint, is a unique process in which one can use a combination of painting and printmaking techniques. It results in a one of a kind image and some effects that can not be achieved in any other form of art.

Richard Hellman of Baltimore, MD states, “The creative process for me has always been a dialog between emotions and the intellectual filter that balances our lives. An idea gets modified once the process of “doing” begins. The various forms of printmaking, and in particular, etching and more recently screen-printing, have provided a rich palette of textures and colors that allow for experimentation and balance between planning and spontaneity.”

Peggy Sampogna lives and works in Millville, DE. She has been painting for many years and has moved through the years from representational oil painting and watercolor to semi-abstraction, then finally to geometric and non-objective works. Some works show her love of the landscape, while others show her fascination for shapes and their relationship to each other. Color is also an important element. Her works reflect her personal journey into shapes, color and textures for their own sake.

TOGETHER AND APART: Art Quilts by New Image Art Quilt Group in the Corkran and Tubbs Galleries.
Formed in 1980, the New Image Art Quilt Group is composed of studio quilt artists from the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. area working in various styles, techniques and media. These artists challenge viewers to look at quilts with a new eye to innovation in piecing, appliqué and embroidery; experimentation in fabric treatment; and interpretation of themes. And together they have collaborated on group pieces.

SIGNIFICANT DETAILS: Mixed Media Photographs by F. Anne Benintende in the Ventures Gallery.
Photography is Anne’s current medium of choice. She loves the freedom of the digital age, where you can see your results without waiting for the film to be processed. Her recent series, Significant Details, involves capturing that detail of the subject which describes it best. Anne is planning to branch out this year and experiment with mixed media photography.
