Drawing for Watercolor Painting

Class Information

Join artist Leo Kahl for a fun, one day deep dive into well-planned drawing for your watercolor painting. You will learn the techniques needed to draw your composition onto proper watercolor paper.

Class topics will include:

  • Simplification of reference photos
  • Drawing on location
  • Developing compositions based on background, middle-ground, foreground and focal area.
  • Inferring and inventing a narrative
  • Arranging big, medium & small shapes
  • Adding figures to a scene
  • Transference of sketch to watercolor paper
  • Creating preliminary thumbnail sketches
  • Specifically planning to take advantage of watercolor attributes
  • Indicating shadow shapes
