The Art of Kintsugi

Class Information

Kintsugi means “to join with gold” in which a piece of pottery is repaired, and the cracks are sealed, then hi-lighted with gold. This art practice has been around since the 15th century and has recently regained popularity. In this class, you will have the opportunity to experience the process of Kintsugi first-hand from breaking your bowl to creating a new, uniquely crafted bowl that will hi-light the cracks (metaphorically, yours) and which can serve as a nice decorative, conversational piece.

You will learn the basic philosophy and principles behind Kintsugi and Wabi-Sabi. Kintsugi embraces the imperfections in life and oneself, encouraging instead self-acceptance. Wabi-Sabi finds beauty in this imperfection, recognizes change and the impermanent nature of life.

Gain appreciation towards how objects and this art form parallel life; where beauty, value and strength can come from something broken and imperfect.
