Shell Flower Sailor’s Valentine

Class Information

In this class, students will learn about the history of sailor’s valentines, seashell mosaics which were popular gifts that sailors brought back from long voyages to their loved ones. A typical sailor’s valentine is crafted in an octagonal wooden box and features tiny shells in a symmetrical design. Flowers made from shells are often included in sailor’s valentines.

Students will make a simplified version of a sailor’s valentine in an 8” octagonal wood frame with a pearlized painted background. The project will feature a variety of shell flowers. Step-by-step instruction and all materials are included.
