Class Information
This two day workshop is intended to properly introduce essential information necessary to produce competent watercolor art. A 3-hour morning session will include an extensive multi-media presentation that covers cornerstone ideas about the watercolor medium.
In addition, we will also cover:
- The importance of proper tools
- Building block application techniques
- The importance of composition
- The “4” Value/Layer strategy
- Simplistic Color ideas
- Why edges between shapes matter
Students will practice the above concepts during the morning session. A 3-hour afternoon session will include step-by-step live demonstrations by the instructor where students will replicate each stage of the instructor’s process to complete a finished piece. Multiple scenes will be demonstrated if time permits.
Supply List
Brushes: Proper type, quality watercolor brushes are important to producing quality paintings. Get the best you can. You only need a few.
Preferably a large pointed mop. Natural squirrel hair no synthetic.
A small pointed mop. Natural squirrel hair.
A rigger (long hair brush)to create fine lines.
Small synthetic pointed brush for details.
Utility brushes: synthetic, flat or filbert shaped, small and medium sizes.
Paper & Support: Good quality watercolor paper is essential to creating proper paintings.
Acid free, cotton rag, 140ib. (Rough or Cold Press Texture) (Arches, Saunders, Canson, Fabriano)
Sizes: (Instructor will work on 14 x 20 sheets) 11 x 14 is a good size.
Watercolor paper is available in loose 22 x 30 sheets and can be cut down to desired size. Watercolor blocks are also a good option.
Be sure to get corrugated plastic backer board. Available at Lowes or Home Depot. This is used to tape watercolor paper to. Cut to about 17 x 24.
Paints: Instructor will be using tube type paints. Cake type paint is also acceptable. Basic Hues: Yellow Ochre, Hansa Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Neutral tint, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Pyrol Red, Pyrol Orange, Chinese White, Titanium White.

Big sponge
plain kleenex
“Soft” Lead pencils
Small pump water mister
Water pail
1.5″ or 2″ wide regular beige masking tape (not the blue stuff)
Electric hair dryer
Large mixing pallet
