Figures on Film
Photography by Steven Billups
February 12, 2021 - March 7, 2021
Opening Reception: Friday, February 12, 2021 (5-7pm)
This exhibition comprises fine art nude images created by Steven Billups and several fine art figure models. The images were created in several scenic landscapes over the last 15 years. All images are captured on film and processed in a wet darkroom.
People are a passion for Billups. As a commercial photographer, Billups works primarily on portraits and photojournalism. Working with the nude figure is a natural extension of his portraiture, although he finds figure studies among the most challenging forms of photographing people.
“Working with the human figure is one of the oldest forms of art,” said Billups, who creates classic, tasteful and original images in collaboration with his models, often placing them in natural, outdoor settings. “Communicating about the photograph, and looking at the test shots with the model, help develop my ideas of the beauty we are trying to create.”
Billups uses the female figure as a design element in his images. He works to create both harmony and contrast, using the flat lines of a landscape and patterns of light and shadow to reveal or conceal the curvilinear shapes of the model. His work demonstrates his ability to capture delicate variations in skin tones and contrast the smooth quality of skin with such elements as the rough bark of a tree.
Steven won 1st place for the 5th Regional Photography Exhibition in 2020.
