Lee Wayne Mills
April 2, 2021 - May 2, 2021
In honor of the life and artistic achievement of Lee Wayne Mills, the Rehoboth Art League presents a collection of the artist’s abstract pieces. Mills, a longtime RAL member artist who served both our Exhibition and Collection Committees and twice held the leadership role of Interim Executive Director for our nonprofit organization, passed away in 2020.
Mills painted as a child with his father, an Army officer, with whom he traveled widely – and with a neighbor, Virginia Hart, who taught at his elementary school. In Europe, as a teenager, he visited some of the world’s greatest museums and by the time he returned to America, art was a daily part of his life. Mills graduated with honors in Art from Ripon College in Wisconsin and later, as an art administrator, held positions throughout the Washington-Baltimore area: Director of Exhibitions at Maryland Hall in Annapolis; Assistant Director of Montpelier Cultural Art Center in Laurel; and working with the architects and City of Gaithersburg to develop the Gaithersburg Art Barn in Kentlands. He retired to the Eastern Shore, and lived in Rehoboth Beach since 2000, where he owned Coastal Frameshop and Gallery. As an artist, Mills’ work has been shown in galleries up and down the East Coast and as far west as Texas. His work is part of numerous public and private collections, including the Rehoboth Art League’s Permanent Collection.
