“Flowers have always fascinated me. Over time, they have become iconic representations as well as actual sources of beauty and delight. I am fascinated by their life process from beginning to end, and have spent years exploring these changes with the camera. Techniques have included: macro, infrared, formal still lifes as well as more natural settings and actually gilding a final image.
An artist’s work often expresses something about where they are in their lives. The past year has been one of some transition for me in which photographically, I have wanted to capture the process of change and flow. Ironically I found that the process of freezing flowers in blocks of ice (which then slowly melt on a back-lit light box), seems to present a moment of flow with the varying depths of field in the ice and the floral parts appearing a bit distorted as seen through the layers of ice. Of course there is always the inevitable movement that happens when a carefully arranged set-up rearranges itself in the water as it is moved to the freezer. The task (and challenge) is to explore and work with what actually emerges—just as this seems to be our task in life.”
