Self Taught: Work from RAL’s Fine Art Collection Highlighting Self-Trained Artists

Self-Taught
May 10, 2024 – July 14, 2024
Homestead
Opening Reception: Friday, May 10, 2024 (5 to 7pm).

The Rehoboth Art League is one of only a few actively collecting art institutions in Delaware.  The collection contains over 1000 items, which include works of art in various media; colonial furniture; artifacts and decorative art collected by the Corkran’s when they resided in the Homestead, as well as an array of RAL’s organizational archives.  The collection maintains a focus on mid-20th century works of art created by notable artists such as Ethel P.B. Leach, William Leach, Orville Peets, Jack Lewis, Howard Pyle, Edward Grant and Howard Schroeder, to name a few.  As part of our exhibition season, we are excited to share many of these works, some which have never been seen, to the public with these special “themed” showcases curated by members of the Collections Committee.

Self-Taught

“Self-Taught” or “Outsider” Artists refers to the wide range of artists that are generally untrained by formal academic or artists schools. These artists vary widely in their mediums, approaches, and styles, however they share the same artistic impulse to create, sometimes from a young age or often later in their lives.

This show exhibits some of the artworks by Artists in the Rehoboth Art League’s collection that are considered “self-taught.” While some may have taken some art classes at RAL, a majority have never attended a formal art school and began creating art out of an internal desire to express themselves.

Self-taught artists highlighted in this showcase are:
Charles Allmond / Tom Benson / Amos Brubaker / Louise Corkran / Kin Frey / Mary Burton Derrickson McCurdy / Frederica Noland
Bertha N. Riley / Amelie Sloan / Teddie Tubbs / Robert B. Wright
